What is a Postage Meter?

A postage meter is a machine that prints postage on envelopes and can seal packages. It works autonomously and is not tied to an internet connection, ensuring that your business has the ability to print and process mail at any time of day, even when your computer is down or you are out of office. Using a postage meter helps your business save money and also helps you track costs. Plus, it eliminates the need to make a trip to the post office and saves your employees valuable time.

Generally, meters are used for businesses that send medium to high volumes of letters and flats, or a mixture of these and small parcels. They allow the user to print the correct amount of postage from an account balance, which is pre-paid. The meter will calculate the rates, display them on an easy to read screen and print postage directly on an envelope or on a label that can be affixed to a package.

Many postage meters can also dispense strips of adhesive paper, called tape, that are used to seal large packages or envelopes with multiple pieces. This saves time and money on stamps and is an environmentally friendly option for shipping larger parcels.

Several different types of postage meters are available to fit the needs of your business. Some offer digital touch screens and other features that streamline the mailing process and increase efficiency. Others are more traditional and offer a range of options to meet your specific needs. In addition, some offer the flexibility to add postage through a phone line or the internet (called remote resetting) without having to go to the post office.
